Reimagining Auckland

It's been a decade since the highly influential Janette Sadik-Khan visited Auckland. That visit was a catalyst for change in the city that has seen the creation and renewal of many public spaces and improvements in cycle and walking infrastructure. But the world has changed, vision is in short supply and momentum has been lost. How can we reimagine Auckland and develop a city fit for the future? 

Janette Sadik-Khan and Rt Hon Helen Clark will be discussing the possibilities that a renewed sense of confidence in urban transformation could bring to Auckland in the next ten years. Janette will be speaking about her global experience of working with city Mayors and authorities. What lessons has she learned and what are the opportunities she sees for Auckland?

Janette Sadik-Khan

Founding Principal, Bloomberg Associates

Janette Sadik-Khan is one of the world’s foremost authorities on transportation and urban transformation. She served as New York City’s transportation commissioner from 2007 to 2013 under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, overseeing historic changes to the city’s streets—pedestrianizing Broadway in Times Square, building nearly 400 miles of bike lanes, seven rapid bus lines and creating more than 60 plazas citywide. A founding principal with Bloomberg Associates, she works with mayors around the world to reimagine and redesign their cities. She chairs the National Association of Transportation Officials/Global Designing Cities Initiative, implementing new, people-focused street design standards, which have been adopted in more than 150 cities across the United States and around the world. 

Helen Clark

Helen Clark was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1999-2008. During her nine years as Prime Minister, New Zealand enjoyed strong economic growth, low unemployment, and significant investment in public services. Her government set clear objectives for sustainable development and climate action.

Helen Clark became the Administrator of the United Nations Development Program in April 2009 and the Chair of the United Nations Development Group, a committee consisting of the heads of all UN funds, programmes and departments working on development issues. She was the first woman to assume these positions, which she held for a full two terms and eight years before standing down in April 2017.
